Do Your Dance

You're supposed to be...

Your voice doesn't fit what I...

The best clothes for you are…

I thought you'd be...

That's not appropriate because...

And here we have it, people's opinion. At times, a harsh, consuming shadow of judgement that blocks out natural light. This behavior is a reflection of old paradigm, mechanistic structures that not only govern organizations, but society as a whole. The word paradigm comes from the Greek term, paradeigma, which means a model example or pattern. Allowing your mind to wander from here, you might reach for other words like repetition, structure, reliability, and security. And why shouldn't you? It's not hard to appreciate confidently anticipating what's next, knowing all four walls of the pretty little box we don't even realize we're in. That is, until there isn't enough room to accommodate our entire self, which requires stepping outside of appropriateness' constraints. Appropriate personification, is it not? As far as the word paradigm is concerned within this context, I also hear "control".

I remember calling to inquire about how I should dress for a meeting. Later during the meeting, surrounded by people who made it a point to shape their reality in a way that reflects their actual inner being, I realized that what I really meant earlier was, "what part of me can I show up with today"? It's a disheartening feeling to acknowledge self-inflicted wrongdoings especially when current, and seemingly permanent, circumstances require waking up the next morning to subject yourself to such actions more than once throughout the day.

When facing change, the amount of contributing factors often creates unease and fear, which can put a person off from reaching for what's great and honest within them. We quell that internal revolution and rejoin society's assembly line. Taking an aerial view on the matter, the honest truth is that we pay costs on either side. Remaining within preset walls can cost suppression, adopting behaviors listed in the job description, or chemical manifestations like depression. Choosing to construct a life that doesn't cause conflict with our true nature may cost us our current job, our relationship, the state we live in, our socioeconomic status, or the approval of those closest to us. Unnerved yet? Don't be.

We're a miraculous culmination of chance and choice, always one possibility away from a different life. However, life isn't a rehearsal, so consider what's your best shot. What are the steps required to turn a concept, an idea into everyday life? When you answer that, you'll have what is called an executable plan. I started off as an English teacher. I loved the kids. I didn't love the hierarchy, the big brother standards, limited reading lists, or the cap on my financial potential. Corporate America felt like what I imagine a trip to a plastic surgeon's office would feel like once she's done with the red pen, highlighting issues that aren't even there. Needless to say, I shot what I had to shoot and I now rock my headscarves and nose ring nearly every day.

I say do your dance. You're perfect the way you are and in every way you'll become. Make it a point to create a lifestyle where you're welcome; where your whole beautiful self will fit; where you can always move the walls to accomodate you.
